IEEE 10G-EPON standard approved

September 11, 2009, IEEE Standards Board announced the approval of 10G-EPON standard --IEEE 802.3av. The standard is the standard expansion 1G-EPON, 10G-EPON EPON in a network can co-exist with the previous generation, allowing the operators to carry out a hybrid deployment and on-demand upgrades.

10G-EPON standard will enable network operators to significantly improve the performance of point to multipoint networks, support emerging high-bandwidth services, while reducing the equipment, operation, upgrade and maintenance related costs. Chairman of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group David Law said. There are currently more than 40 companies and organizations to support 10G-EPON standard, it is expected next year there will be the actual deployment.
